Civil Twilight

I wanted to tell you guys about the Civil Twilight show I went to with some friends on March 10th.  (No, they are not in anyway related to the Twilight Saga by Stephanie Meyer, even though the lead singer resembles Robert Pattinson...)  It was at the Hawthorne Theatre in Portland, and

it. was. A.M.A.Z.I.N.G.!

Civil Twilight consists of two brothers and a lifelong friend who grew up together in Cape Town, South Africa.  These guys have some serious talent.  They are incredible musicians, and were playful with the audience.  Lead singer/bassist/pianist Steven McKellar has an entrancing stage presence with an edgy, yet sultry voice.  I love the variety in their songs (from soft piano ballads to rocking out with guitars), and that their lyrics are meaningful, emotional, and thought-provoking.
Yes, he is playing his electric guitar with a bow!  Wicked-awesome.

Here's a snippet of "Soldier"

The girls I went with were a blast!  They came to the concert not knowing much about the band, and left with autographed CD's and pics with the band members.  I think they're fans.

We got there early enough to be right up front.  I'd say the most memorable moment of the night was when Steven McKellar lowered his mic stand down to the floor mid-song right where we were standing.  He hopped down in front of us with his bass, and we were freaking out!!  The crowd went wild.  It was insane.  I turned my back to him to take a video of me with him in it to capture the moment and then he put his arm around my shoulders nonchalantly, while he was still singing.  I was so star-struck, I about fainted.  And yes, I caught it on the video, but oh man, it's too embarrassing to post!  :)

Note: THIS IS NOT ZOOMED IN!!!
He was singing their cover of Massive Attack's "Teardrop"

I want to give a shout out to A Silent Film, who opened for CT.  They are from Oxford, England, have awesome accents, and their bass player looks like Borat.  They were great.
This is a snippet of "You Will Leave a Mark"

If you get a chance, go see a Civil Twilight show!  They are still touring the US.  I think maybe my East coast friends still have a shot.  If you like U2/Coldplay type music, you won't be disappointed!
