Crafty

You know, I don't consider myself a crafty person.  I wish I were more inclined to be crafty, but often the perfectionist side of me gets in the way.  I once attempted to enjoy a weekly card-making group a few years ago.  I couldn't, for the life of me, let go of the need to make things symmetrical or make things look exactly like the sample card.  It took me 2 hours to finish one card my first night, just to have the ribbon fall off on my way home.

It's the same reason I haven't become a scrapbooker

* I'm really hoping that non-scrapbookers get into Heaven. *

I'm trying to whittle away at the perfectionist in me a sliver at a time, and let my creativity come through, because I really enjoy it once I can get over my inhibitions.

One April day in 2008, I came across this pretty little project on Dandee's blog (Reid's awesomely talented and crafty cousin).  It seemed simple enough for me, and my time at the local craft store gathering supplies would be minimal (Side note: I loathe the craft store - only because I am too indecisive, and there are just too many decisions to make there.  It gives me a headache just thinking about it!).

After planning to make a butterfly collage for months, Christmas time came, and the desire to give a unique and personal gift lit a fire under my non-crafty bum.  Yes, I just said bum.

December 2008.  My first butterfly collage (for my mother-in-law).
I used mostly old Pottery Barn catalogs:

I made these two whale punch collages for a couple friends having baby boys in July 2009.  I chose more vibrant colors, and tried to make them reflect the colors in their respective nurseries:

Last month, I got to pull out the butterfly punch again, and this time to make a collage for a friend's baby girl!  I have so much fun searching for different colors and textures to punch.

I punch a whole lot more butterflies than I actually use:

I used old Martha Stewart Living magazines this time around.

The finished product:

I loved creating something so feminine.
Now, friends, if you would produce more baby girls, I'd appreciate it!

  7. I still admire the one in Avery's room every time I go in there. I started working on a rocket one for Alex, but have only gotten to the punching out phase. I will finish! Thanks for helping me overcome my non-craftiness too.

  9. Alissa - the punches are Martha Stewart brand. I found the biggest selection at Michael's. Once you see all the cute punches, lots of ideas start rolling. The only trick is to make sure there's enough room on the punch-out to put adhesive in the center.

And Alison - Nope, not prego here. I made the baby girl one for my friend's baby shower. :) Sorry for the confusion! I promise if I were, there would be a much bigger announcement!
