Workout Update

I just realized it's been a LONG time since I last did an update on my running. It probably has to do with the fact that I am dealing with some knee injuries for the past 6 weeks, and haven't been able to run, let alone break any records, or do anything exciting.

I was referred to physical therapy, and told I have a very common (especially among young, women runners) running injury called patellofemoral pain syndrome, i.e. "runners knee." After visiting with the physical therapist, I learned that a few different things probably caused it.

  1. I found out I overpronate when I run (my feet roll too the inside too much) - which causes more stress than normal on my knees. I'm getting new running shoes that are made to help correct it.

  2. I increased my mileage too fast - I have since learned that you should only increase your mileage 10% from one week to the next. oops.

  3. I was running on a treadmill at 0% incline. He said doing so is almost like running slightly downhill. When you run downhill, gravity pulls you more than your muscles would otherwise (rough on your knees). On the treadmill the belt is pulling you. If you incline it a little, 2% is what he recommended to me, your muscles will have to initiate the movement.
  4. I am a side sleeper - almost always the same side too. The PT pointed out that when you sleep on your side, your top leg usually crosses over your bottom leg a bit, putting you in a stretching position all night long. That muscle/tendon being stretched out can impact how it holds your knee in place when you go to run. So, I'm sleeping with a pillow between my knees to fix that.

I had no idea there were so many little things that could result in injuring my knees. I have learned a lot, and realized how incredibly complex knees are. Working knees were definitely something I took for granted until now. Now I can't wait until they are healed! I wanna RUN!

Even though I can't run, I have still been going to the gym. Thank goodness I had already established the habit. I have been doing the elliptical, and some stationary bike for cardio - working my way up to eventually walking on the treadmill then running again. I do abs and free weights, and then some exercises from the PT to strengthen the muscles around my knees. I still love the way exercising makes me feel, but I've gotta be honest. It doesn't match how awesome I feel after a run.

So, I know some of you have been working out too. What are you doing? How do you like it? What are your goals?

p.s. a HUGE "way to go" to my friend Alissa who manages to work out at home even while her 3 little chilluns are climbing on top of her. You are lookin' fabulous!

  1. WOW!! I feel like I need to give you a $20 co-pay I learned so much from your post! SERIOUSLY! So, I will now set the incline on the treadmill to 2%...and a pillow for sleeping (I side sleep sometimes too)! Thanks Dr. Kristen! my only goal for fitness is to keep it up! I go to our little gym here at least 5 times a week! :)

  2. good for you! Seriously you are so amazing; and I didn't know that tidbit about sleeping on your side...although ever since being prego, I always sleep with a pillow. Just SO comfy. *sigh* although I don't wish I could get up at the crack of dawn, I do wish I could work out with ya'll. The doc says no go. Ahh, to be a lazy bum......

  5. Gosh I'm so proud of you. Looking back now I don't know how I ever got up at 5 with you.Can I just say that I feel at fault for this injury??I'm glad you are so determined to work through it and get better, most would just give up running.I also love that after-run feeling, well you already knew that, so I know why you want it back!I won't discuss my routine..ahem..but I will say what has helped me is to make 'fitness' a part of my day, so it never feels like UGH I have to 'workout'.Alissa is awesome for working out at home, there are hundreds of things you can do and it's all free!I also find variety helps keep you from getting bored.Boredom=slacking.Sorry for the novel but fitness is on my mind hourly.Keep up your determination, you keep me going too. Thanks for the update!

  8. Thanks for the info, I learned a lot. I am a runner too, and I have had problems with my knees in the past, so I am going to try the incline, and seeing as how I am a side sleeper, I will but a pillow between my knees! I am really impressed that you are continuing to go to the gym even though you can't run, knowing me I would use it as a good excuse not to go!

  9. I hope that your knees get better soon! Thanks for sharing all the great info. It is amazing how our bodies work and then what it takes to get them working again after an injury. I am loving how I feel after I work out! It is nice to be able to do it in the privacy of my own home and just be a sweaty stinky mess around my kids. I am now really wanting to exercise because I have been seeing results. Hopefully that continues! Keep up the good work. You are motivating the rest of us!

  10. Wow, you go girl. I have some of the same knee problems you do. I can't run anymore, so I just do the elliptical. It's a good workout, but you're right - nothing beats a good run!!!

  11. Kristen I read an article about cross training at the gym and the ability to get a better workout. I agree there isn't anything like running, and I don't think I see results as fast with anything else, but I know that I will work out hard when I have injuries if I can just jog a mile, and got for about 20 minutes on the elliptical, and then either walk or ride the bike. It's a easy way to transition when you have an injury, and supposidly you work harder when you switch it up a little from time to time. I will also ask my sister Michelle what she thinks- she's a personal trainer and nutritionist and she's helped Greg overcome injuries to get in boot camp shape before boot camp. But you gave me a ton of good info!

  12. man, everything i was going to say, everyone else really has. so, ditto! i've been lifting weights for forever at home but have been wanting to start running. i'm waiting to get over a fractured foot though. I still can't stuff my foot into a tennis shoe without it killing. which is annoying cuz my doctor said it would be healed by now. anytime now...lol.
