Rear-Ended Adventure

**Warning: Long post ahead. **

Last Tuesday afternoon I had the kids loaded in the back seat on our way to pick Reid up from work. I was stopped at a red light watching for a break in the passing cars to turn right. [probably listening to the Country music station, since it is summer time after all. Summer weather brings out the Country fan in me.] And then...

A big ol' Ford Expedition rear-ended my little blue minding-its-own-business Honda Accord. I shifted forward in my seat, and my seat belt locked up. The boys just looked around like "what was that?". It's the first accident of any kind that I've ever been in, so I was a little shaken. It really wasn't even that bad - none of us were injured - it could have been a lot worse! It dented our bumper and cracked the back lights. Luckily the guy was super nice and apologetic [and has insurance!]. He was concerned for the children, and then I'm sure it made him feel even worse when I stepped out with my large protruding prego belly.

**As a side note, I was talking to his insurance and the lady said "now he said you had twins in the back?" I laughed and told her they are actually 2 years apart, but do look similar. Then she said "and he mentioned you are pregnant, wondering if it was possibly twins again?" Yes, I probably do appear to be carrying twins, but nope, just one in there, thx.**

I called my OB's office in the morning to see if she would want to see me - just to make sure everything was OK. My OB wasn't in, so the nurse talked to the on-call Dr. who wanted me to go into Labor & Delivery at the hospital to get monitored for a bit. So, a few hours later I dropped my kiddos off to play with friends, and headed to the hospital. It was a little crazy being there in that hospital bed, thinking I'll be there FOR REAL very soon. They attached a monitor for the baby's heartbeat, and also one to measure any contractions I was having. After about an hour and a half, the nurse said everything looked great and that she was going to go call the Dr., then I'd be able to go home. She came back 30 min. later with an identification wristband for me, and told me I needed to stay a little longer. Since my blood is Rh negative, they wanted to run some blood tests and make sure the baby's blood hadn't crossed mine. A nice asian man from the lab came in 20 min. later and drew what seemed like a million vials of blood, and then I was allowed to go home...

Then the roller coaster began:

7:30pm - the Dr. calls and leaves a message on my phone saying that all the blood tests were normal, except one...the one that tests to see if the baby's blood crossed mine. So, she wants me to come into the office in the morning and get a Rhogam shot. Not a big deal.

7:32pm - the Dr. calls back, and has changed her mind. Now she wants to to go be monitored overnight at Labor & Delivery, and also get a Rhogam shot. So I tell Reid, and start planning to be at the hospital all night long.

7:40pm - the Dr. calls again and proceeds to tell me that the lab isn't sure about the result of that test. One person read it positive, and one person read it negative. So she wants me to "hold tight" until they get the result figured out, and she will call me back.

....waiting....get the kids in bed.

....waiting....not looking forward to the sting-burn-burn-burn of the Rhogam shot.

....waiting....wondering if they're gonna let me order from the late night menu at the hospital.

9:40pm - the Dr. calls back and says it was all an error. My tests are all normal. False alarm. No need to get a shot, no need to go back to the hospital. Whew! Goodnight!

1:00am - I wake up, and can't sleep because it's soooo hot in our room.

3:30am - Jack wakes up crying.

5:00am - the boys wake up ready for the day, and I spend the next hour trying to get them to go back to sleep.

I'm thinking a night away at the air conditioned hospital would have been nice!

And now for a gratuitous picture of Jack's "cheese" face for making it this far in my post:

  1. Holy cow! What a roller coaster! I'm so glad it all worked out well in the end... except the kids waking up so much!

You know, there must just be a shortage of pregnant women around because why does everyone ask if you're carrying twins?! Don't they realize that even a normal, singleton pregnancy makes a woman quite large? (When I was out on a walk last week, a lady asked me if the walk was "working any magic" ...uh, not the kind you're thinking of 'cause I still have 4 months to go!) You look super cute in your pics, so I'm sure that guy just isn't used to seeing prego women :)

  2. Glad you are all safe and that you made it through the craziness. You are a lovely prego woman!! You should have just told the guy you were having triplets and felt like you were going into labor. That would have freaked him out. Love you guys and can't wait to see baby boy #3!!

  3. hahaha....i haven't laughed so hard in awhile kristen-thanks! sorry it was at your pregnant expense. People are dumb. Guys are even dumber. I feel you on the 'must be any day now' or 'twins' comments though. Hang in there. I agree though, you should have said it was triplets or something and milked it for all it was worth! ;)

  4. What craziness!! I'm glad everything was ok with the blood tests, I'm sure that was super stressful not knowing and wondering! I bet a hospital stay would've been more relaxing than being at home with the kids having a rough night though!

  5. Wow, that's quite the story. I'm glad everything is okay, and that you don't have 2 sets of twins. Now that would be crazy.

  6. Ohhh geez... what an adventure!!! I'm sooo glad that you and the kiddos are ok!!! I was reading and crossing my fingers that you weren't announcing that Baby came early!!! You'll have to tell that Baby that he did a good job staying safe, and make sure he knows that he can still take time to keep growing just right! :) Hope you got a nap somewhere later in the day! ;)

Oh yah... thanks for your fb message! :) Any luck with a Baby name or a blog name?!?

  7. Oh man - what an adventure.

I had no idea you had a Rh factor!

And I seriously wonder if this baby will look any different or if it will look like you are going to be toting around triplets!

  8. Wow, I'm glad everything turned out okay. I can't believe the insurance lady said that to you!!! You're delivering at Tuality, right? Love their cafeteria food, sooo YUMMY! And the lab there is MESSED UP. When I had my quad screen done, 3 of the 4 came back questionable, so they made me go see a genetic counselor. They had my test results marked as 34 year old Asian woman, which I am obviously neither. My nurse told me that lab is always screwing things up. Sounds like they need to fire someone!

  9. oh my gosh...that is some afternoon!

I'd like to kick that insurance lady...what a goon.

And while I'm on my violent streak, I'd kick the lab people too!

Hey, you're RH neg?! Me too! So far, all of my kids have been neg as well, so I've never had to have the 2nd shot after delivery! :)
