A little background...
Three of my siblings and I completed a Spanish Immersion program in our local public schools in Utah. The program was from 1st-9th grade, and at the end of it we took the Spanish AP test to receive college credit. I LOVED it! Knowing Spanish has come in handy more times than I can count, and I've been so grateful for that opportunity. I believe that my brain was challenged and stretched by learning a second language, and helped me succeed in other academic subjects. Because I learned the language so young, it is deeply embedded. I was completely fluent by 9th grade - reading, writing, and speaking. I would even have dreams completely in Spanish. My skills and vocabulary have dwindled without constant practice, but it comes back so quickly when I am thrown back into it. I have always thought that if my children had the chance, that I would love to have them learn a second language also.
Now onto the uniforms...
Earlier this year, I became aware of a new public charter school in our area. It peaked my interest first of all because it is a Spanish Immersion school.
Reid and I collected as much information as we could, and we weighed the pros and cons of attending this charter school vs. the awesome school Clark attended last year (just a short walk down the street). We talked to Clark to see if learning Spanish & wearing uniforms was even something he was interested in. (We got an enthusiastic YES). After applying, and months of waiting on a wait list, we found out yesterday that Clark has been accepted!
School starts in just 10 days, so I was honestly quite shocked to receive the phone call. I had pretty much resigned to the fact that he wouldn't be accepted this year, and started planning to attend our local elementary school. I've got to switch gears as far as supply lists and school clothes go, but we are excited to do it.
Besides the Spanish Immersion, I'm really excited about the Singapore Math program (Clark loves math). I'm also looking forward to smaller class sizes, longer school days (8am-3pm M-Th, 8am-2:15pm F), more instructional school days during the school year, and that we have a few friends attending too!
Arriba!

That is awesome. I'm totally jealous!
ReplyDeleteThat's really awesome that you guys are doing that for him. Clark will love it, I'm sure! I really wish we lived closer so we could put Sterling in too!!
ReplyDeleteThat is so great! My kids go to public charter also, take Spanish 3 times a week, and we LOVE Singapore Math! Allie was not too happy at first with the uniforms, but is now good with it. You will love it! I didn't know you spoke (or dreamed ha!) in Spanish. How cool!
ReplyDeleteWow! That is awesome!
ReplyDeleteso cool! Xander started his spanish program but since its run through the public school--no uniforms! I'm glad to hear your perspective--I hope Xander has such a positive experience!
ReplyDeleteWhat an awesome thing! I will tell you now - YOU WILL ABSOLUTELY LOVE BEING IN A CHARTER SCHOOL!
ReplyDeleteI love all your reasons - those are mine too - I was thrilled when our oldest was picked on the lottery!
Here is to awesome and amazing learning! Enjoy!
I love it Kristen!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great opportunity!
(ps...i think uniforms would be sort of nice! certainly streamline the morning routine and cut down on all the time it takes to "shop for school clothes!")
